This panel, organized in two sections, presents a set of research projects in dialogue around emerging memories of the recent past in the Southern Cone, the social movements that resisted dictatorships and neoliberal policies of the late 20th century, and the challenges of the current far-right, human rights-denying and anti-feminist advance in the region. Through an interdisciplinary approach to new voices and readings of that past, we explore the shifts in memory observed from the perspectives of gender, affect, and generation.
What experiences are recovered, made visible, and heard (or not) within the framework of memories of the recent past? What stories are told and who are their subjects? What new aspects emerge when we return to archives of violence in the region's recent past from the perspectives of gender, affect, and generations? How are these memories updated, and what new instances of encounter and recognition do they enable in the present?
We will address these questions by working with community archives and intersectional memories, discourses on social media, and collective actions in public spaces. We will explore the complex web of silences and memories that surround intergenerational dialogues, the expression of affect, and the meanings of gender in the "cultural battles" of the present. The study of these struggles over memories contributes to an understanding of the crossroads of the present, as well as to a reconfiguration of the meanings of human rights, democratic values, and justice.
[RG LatAm] Género, afectos y generaciones: luchas por las memorias en el Cono Sur (Sección 2)
Este panel, organizado en dos secciones, presenta un conjunto de investigaciones en diálogo en torno a memorias emergentes sobre el pasado reciente en el Cono Sur, los movimientos sociales que resistieron las dictaduras y las políticas neoliberales de fines del siglo XX, así como sobre los desafíos de la actual avanzada ultraderechista negacionista de los derechos humanos y antifeminista en la región. A través del abordaje interdisciplinar de nuevas voces y lecturas de ese pasado, indagamos los desplazamientos de las memorias observados desde las perspectivas del género, los afectos y las generaciones.
¿Qué experiencias se recuperan, visibilizan y escuchan (o no) en el marco de las memorias sobre el pasado reciente? ¿Qué historias se cuentan y quiénes son los sujetos de las mismas? ¿Qué aspectos novedosos emergen cuando volvemos a los archivos sobre las violencias del pasado reciente de la región desde las perspectivas del género, los afectos y las generaciones? ¿Cómo se actualizan esas memorias y que nuevas instancias de encuentro y reconocimiento habilitan en el presente?
Abordaremos estas cuestiones a partir del trabajo con archivos comunitarios y memorias interseccionales, discursos en redes sociales y acciones colectivas en el espacio público e indagaremos en la compleja trama de silencios y memorias que rodean los diálogos intergeneracionales, la expresión de afectos y los sentidos del género en las “batallas culturales” del presente. El estudio de estas luchas por las memorias contribuye a la comprensión de las encrucijadas del presente, así como a la reconfiguración de los sentidos de los derechos humanos, los valores democráticos y la justicia.
Barbara Sutton, University at Albany, SUNY - "Collective Memory, Recent History, and Current Authoritarianisms: Feminist Narratives and Responses in Argentina"
The rise of far-right forces and the election of Javier Milei as Argentina’s president have created a challenging context for feminist and broader social justice activism. Aligned with the global right’s repudiation of “gender ideology” and “wokism,” Milei has made feminism one of his key targets. However, the impact of his government on gender policies, feminist concepts, and feminist activism cannot be separated from wider governmental measures such as the repression of political protest, economic “austerity” policies, the dissemination of violent rhetoric, the shrinking of the state’s social welfare functions, and the attack on social solidarity in favor of crass individualism. Furthermore, in feminist responses to authoritarianism and the new right, how does the collective memory of other critical moments in recent history—including the last military dictatorship, the democratic transition, and the economic crisis of 2001—shape how activists relate to the contemporary moment? What strategies have helped these activists navigate this difficult political context and its emotional toll, avoid burnout, and continue pushing forward?
This presentation will share preliminary results from in-depth interviews with feminist activists in Argentina engaged in diverse types of organizations and modes of political praxis. From institutional to grassroots feminist organizing, from activism on social media to community organizing in low-income neighborhoods, and from cultural and artistic interventions to those focused on policy and economics, feminist activists also reflect on the lessons and memories of recent history. This social memory can serve not only as a cautionary tale but also as a source of tools and resources for resistance.

El avance de fuerzas de ultraderecha y la elección de Javier Milei como presidente de la Argentina han creado un contexto difícil para el feminismo y para las luchas más amplias por la justicia social en el país. En sintonía con la derecha global y su repudio a la llamada “ideología de género” y al “wokismo”, Milei ha convertido al feminismo en uno de sus principales blancos. El impacto de su gobierno sobre las políticas de género se liga a medidas gubernamentales más amplias, tales como la represión de la protesta política, medidas de “austeridad” económica, difusión de discursos violentos, achicamiento de las funciones sociales del Estado y ataques a la solidaridad en favor de un individualismo extremo. Más aún, en las respuestas feministas frente al autoritarismo y a las nuevas derechas, ¿cómo incide la memoria colectiva de otros momentos críticos de la historia reciente en los modos en que las activistas se vinculan con la situación contemporánea? ¿Qué estrategias les han permitido atravesar este contexto político y sus costos emocionales, evitar el desgaste y seguir adelante? Esta presentación compartirá resultados preliminares de entrevistas en profundidad con activistas feministas en la Argentina, involucradas en distintos tipos de organizaciones y formas de praxis política. Desde feministas militando en la arena institucional hasta aquellas en organizaciones de base; desde el activismo en redes sociales hasta el trabajo comunitario en barrios populares; y desde intervenciones culturales y artísticas hasta aquellas centradas en las políticas públicas y la economía, los activismos feministas reflexionan también sobre las lecciones y memorias del pasado reciente. Esta memoria social puede funcionar no solo como advertencia, sino también como una fuente de herramientas y recursos para la resistencia.
Lucía Lodwick and Débora Gerbaudo Suárez, UNSAM, IDAES. CONICET - "FROM MEMORY TO ARCHIVE: feminist memories and counter-hegemonic archiving practices"
With the aim of reimagining the ways in which women and LGBTIQ+ remember, we developed two creative spaces designed to explore, rescue, and record personal and collective experiences linked to feminist becoming, the body, and desire.
In the workshop Writing with the Body, we explore autobiographical writing from a feminist perspective focused on emotions, affections, and micro-resistance to gender and generational mandates. Through the intersection of art and memory, we recover authors and visual artists who inspire experiential writing from and with the body. As Suely Rolnik (2008) points out, the vitality of the art work “emanates the power that an artistic proposal will have to activate sensitivity in the subjectivity of those who experience it” (p. 11). Feminist sensitivity raises awareness of intersectional identity (gender, class, ethnicity, and race) in writing and its marks on the body as an archive.
In the Feminist Memories Workshop, we build an affective archive nourished by emotions, biographical milestones, and personal genealogies that become collective through mobilizing questions about becoming a feminist (Ahmed, 2021). The archive of feelings (Cvetkovich, 2003) documents intimacy, sexuality, love, and activism as areas rendered invisible by the traditional archive. It is about moving from intimate to collective memories, recognizing that the personal is political. In the workshops, we recover significant texts, images, photos, videos, or objects. By building an affective archive of feminist memories, we reflect on the opening of spaces for socialization and collective creation, where records are intertwined in counter-hegemonic archival practices. These practices are a living tool for intergenerational transmission, recovering feminist genealogies, making different trajectories visible, and leaving traces through feelings, words, and images.

CONICET "DEL RECUERDO AL ARCHIVO: memorias feministas y prácticas archiveras contrahegemónicas" Con el propósito de reimaginar los modos en que mujeres y disidencias hacemos memoria, llevamos adelante dos espacios de creación orientados a explorar, rescatar y registrar experiencias personales y colectivas vinculadas al devenir feminista, al cuerpo y al deseo. En el workshop Escribir con el cuerpo exploramos la escritura autobiográfica desde una mirada feminista situada en las emociones, los afectos y las micro resistencias ante los mandatos de género y generacionales. A través del cruce entre arte y memoria recuperamos autoras y artistas visuales que inspiran escrituras vivenciales desde y con el cuerpo. Como señala Suely Rolnik, de la vitalidad de la obra “emana el poder que tendrá una propuesta artística de activar la sensibilidad en la subjetividad de aquéllos que la vivencian”. La sensibilidad feminista hace conciente la identidad interseccional (género, clase, etnia y raza) en la escritura y sus marcas en el cuerpo como archivo. En el Taller de memorias feministas construimos un archivo afectivo nutrido de emociones, hitos biográficos y genealogías personales que devienen colectivas a partir de preguntas movilizadoras acerca del hacerse feminista. El archivo de sentimientos documenta la intimidad, la sexualidad, el amor y el activismo como áreas invisibilizadas por el archivo tradicional. Se trata de pasar de los recuerdos íntimos a los colectivos, reconociendo que lo personal es político. En los talleres recuperamos textos, imágenes, fotos, videos u objetos significativos. Con la construcción de un archivo afectivo de memorias feministas reflexionamos sobre la socialización y creación colectiva, donde los registros se entrelazan en prácticas archiveras contrahegemónicas. Estas prácticas son una herramienta viva de transmisión intergeneracional, recuperan genealogías feministas, visibilizan distintas trayectorias y dejan huellas desde el sentir, la palabra y la imagen.

On the Affective Dimension of the Democratic Transition: Feminist Journalism, Image, and Memory in Argentina

This presentation is part of a project devoted to analyzing the images that circulated in the public sphere as part of feminist activism during the Argentinean democratic transition (1981-1985), focusing on how the movement of those years shaped the memory of its recent past. Based on the scrutiny of the images included in the supplement La mujer (Women) of the newspaper Tiempo Argentino (1982-1987), this presentation analyzes the consequences of the use and reinterpretation of the premises of pop art as exhibited in its pages. It is through a parodic attitude that the supplement, aimed at a broad and not necessarily feminist audience, constructed its own experience of the moment of transition based on a memory of its recent past in which the political and aesthetic actions of the 1960s became central. The conceptual framework that guides this analysis—and which refers to a broader project—focuses on accounting for the affective dimension of the historical concept of transition. I understand that historical concepts are sustained not only by a specific conception of temporality, but also by specific affective configurations that define the way in which contact with the past and the future is established. Thus, for example, if progress is associated with optimism, crisis with anxiety, and disappointment with the idea of decline, the concept of transition is often marked by a tense affective configuration that constructs a characteristic view of the past. Throughout this presentation, based on the case study mentioned above, I will explore how the classic tension between continuity and discontinuity that marks moments of historical transition involves affective experiences—anger, hope, anxiety, etc.—that place at the center of the discussion the way in which feminism of those years constructed its own memory through images.
