Session Information

The patriarchal civilization in which we live is sustained by a narrative that seeks to naturalize its existence, preventing its reproduction and perpetuation from being questioned. This narrative is based on an episteme that favors domination, shaping society's imaginaries, bonds, and meanings. Epistemology, understood as a way of relating to reality and not just as a process of producing and validating knowledge, becomes a key element in understanding how our interpersonal relationships are structured.

Questioning established knowledge inevitably involves questioning the bonds we maintain. Thus, in order to create forms of relationship that transcend hegemonic ones, it is essential to develop new knowledge that challenges dominant narratives. This approach invites us to reflect on the conceptions we have internalized and to explore the void left by rebellious narratives that have been silenced or ignored.

The proposed panel calls on us to take responsibility for restoring the intimacy of our heritage, recovering those genealogies that have been taken from us. This process of reconstruction is essential for forging more just and equitable bonds that move away from patriarchal structures. In this sense, feminism presents itself as a powerful tool for dismantling oppressive narratives and opening spaces for new forms of knowledge and relationships.

Transfeminist policies in photographic practices, archives, and dissident bodies”.

The paper entitled “Intimacy of Heritage: Transfeminist Politics in Photographic Practices, Archives, and Dissident Bodies” is a research proposal that seeks to explore and analyze the photographic and curatorial practices of LGBTQIA+ artists and collectives in Latin America during the 21st century. This work is based on an intersectional approach, which allows for the visibility of the trajectories and contributions of these practices to the contemporary art world.
The concept of intersectionality becomes a key tool for fostering debate on the intersections between migration, race, class, gender, and sexuality. Through this analytical lens, the field of photography and the epistemology of the image are examined, allowing for a deeper understanding of how images can be used to articulate dissident narratives and generate critical knowledge.
This study is not only part of the academic sphere, but also seeks to contribute to the restoration of a culture of rights and the revitalization of the invisible narratives of LGBTQIA+ communities. By addressing the distortions that these communities have suffered in the media and institutional archives, this work positions itself as a space of resistance and vindication of photographic experiences in Latin America. The research, therefore, is presented as an essential tool for the visibility and recognition of the struggles and contributions of dissident bodies in the contemporary art scene.

Lorena González Fuentes, Universidad Católica del Maule - "The recovery of desire and imagination as a praxis of transgressive escape from the normalizing epistemic order.”

The following paper seeks to address how the epistemic disposition we inhabit and which shapes us deploys a form of rationality that imposes, through what it knows and how it does so, order as a way of being in the world. As this order seeks to reproduce and endure itself, it engenders a reified reality. Thus, the naturalization of its functioning is assumed, its logics are introjected, and the possibility of dreaming of a world with other forms of connection and life choices is curtailed. In other words, a constriction of imaginaries, patterns of action, and aspirations is generated, where, consequently, the knowledge that circulates is functionally circumscribed to the prescribed narrowness.
In the face of this, it is urgent to position the power that the recovery of desire and imagination engender, insofar as they foster a reconnection with chaos and its creative richness. This movement forges a praxis of escape from the established order that would enable the emergence of interwoven meanings and knowledge, which reject any centralization of power and thus strengthen the capacity to create, act, and bring about a more just and fulfilling future.

Imagining a transdisciplinary methodology of taxidermy as an artistic, critical, and representational practice in normative exhibition contexts"
As a visual artist and taxidermist, rethinking the craft from a transdisciplinary and feminist perspective allows me to question the epistemic imaginaries that have historically sustained the representation of the animal body in museum spaces. Etymologically understood as “order of the skin”, taxidermy has operated under logics of domination and objectification, which through its dioramas “credibly vocalize ideological truths” to consolidate itself as the most effective epistemological tool in modern natural history. The MUDAR proposal, part of my doctoral research, seeks to subvert these orders by proposing a transdisciplinary methodology that articulates artistic, ethical, and spiritual knowledge, aimed at reconfiguring the practices of conservation and exhibition of taxidermied bodies. Valuing the craft also implies thinking about it critically. I refuse to think that “order” is fundamental to the existence of skin and bodies that transcend their vitality. Therefore, this craft as we know it needs to be rethought, challenged, and renamed. Working with what was once alive demands an ethical, material, and symbolic relationship with the animal body. Artistic practice, in this context, cannot avoid reflecting on which lives it sustains, which it instrumentalizes, and which it silences. Faced with the normative and hierarchical logics that turn bodies into neutral objects, art can —and must— open cracks in established discourses and imagine more attentive and sensitive modes of relationship. From this perspective, art not only represents the world, but also thinks about and transforms it from within. For this reason, I conceive of artistic practice as a form of embodied knowledge that arises from doing, contact, and experience, and that has the power to activate the consciousness of our own gaze.

This reflection is part of the doctoral research project Constellations of the Undesired: Anticolonial Fictions to Imagine a Feminist Visual Epistemology from the South. It proposes to think of current artistic practices as territories of dispute where not only the visible is at stake, but also that which has historically been disauthorized from appearing.
Drawing on the notion of the coloniality of seeing (Barriendos, 2011), it problematizes how modern-colonial visual regimes have configured hierarchies of body, knowledge, and memory, relegating the experiences of racialized women and feminized bodies to the margins. Yet in those margins—understood not as peripheries but as spaces of escape and enunciative potency—artistic practices emerge that disobey the gaze.
Through anthropophagic strategies and gestures such as failure, glitch, or falsification, activist-artists such as Cholita Chic (Chile), Shañu (Peru), Tuxamee (Mexico), Flora Nómada (Argentina), among others, intervene in and unsettle colonial archives (Azoulay, 2019) and their imposed pedagogies, while rehearsing imaginaries that disrupt the mandates of the hegemonic narratives. Within their visual practices, anticolonial fictions and profoundly political speculative exercises are activated, unfolding an inventiveness historically denied. From there, they reclaim a creative sovereignty that restores unauthorized memories and reconfigures the bonds between body, territory, and representation.
To think with and from these counter-visual representations is to open a space to imagine other ways of knowing: a situated, feminist, decolonial visual epistemology (Espinoza Miñoso, 2022), which turns the image into a gesture of repair and radical imagination.
