SCREENING: Verbal and visual strategies in the construction of traumatic social memories: reappropriation, re-semantization of state records and animation as narrative resources for representing state repression

Session Information

We propose the projection and open discussion of the animated documentary short Court Record: In Memoriam Péter Mansfeld (2007, 7 mins) about the figure of an underage fighter that participated in the armed resistance during the 1956 Hungarian Uprising. Our aim is to historically frame the story, examine the construction of the figure of an underage martyr, a central figure in the social imaginary of post-regime-change Hungary, and explore the memory processes by concentrating on certain aspects of the representation and narrative strategies of the film. With a narration assembled exclusively from excerpts from court records, the short narrates the detailed process of the execution of Mansfeld’s death sentence, imposed on him in a show trial in the aftermath of the crush-down of the Uprising as part of the ensuing political retaliation and intimidation. We shall explore the potential and power of narrative strategies that reappropriate and re-semanticize state records on repression for the purpose of commemoration and the construction of the youth martyr. This verbal strategy turns particularly powerful given that it is coupled with a somewhat abstracted visual narration through animation, a format rapidly gaining ground as a resource for memory-construction in the terrain of politically sensitive, traumatic topics (cf. Persepolis (2007), Waltz with Bashir (2008), Flee (2021). The tension and co-construction between the verbal and the visual narration allows for a rich discuss on how the artistic choice of representation contribute to the processing of trauma and shock what the repression after 1956 (also in more general terms), by recurring to formats such as animation that can reach audiences beyond the usual public adept to more traditional, cinematographic historical documentaries.
