Description of the roundtableThis roundtable explores the intersections between memory, ecology and implication, proposing an interdisciplinary dialogue on the ethical and political challenges currently faced by Memory Studies. In an era marked by the devastating consequences of climate change, the loss of democratic imaginaries, and the resurgence of authoritarian and far-right movements that enact violence against subaltern, migrant, and indigenous populations, revisiting the field of Memory Studies becomes an urgent intellectual and political task. Building on recent debates in environmental humanities, critical indigenous studies, theories of implication and the paradigm of slow memory, this session asks how memory can help us think through the entanglement of historical/political and ecological violence. How do memories of past traumas reverberate within ongoing processes of environmental catastrophe? What would it mean to imagine other temporalities of remembrance in order to interrogate the present of our democracies? In what ways can these recent contributions to Memory Studies help us imagine other forms of inhabiting the present and envision more sustainable futures? In dialogue with the longstanding Latin American and particularly Argentinian legacy of human rights movement that have foregrounded memory as a practice of justice and democratic commitment, the round table situates these questions within a global conversation on the ethical and political stakes of remembrance. Bringing together scholars who approach these issues from different disciplinary and geographical perspectives, the session includes presentations by Michael Rothberg (“Implicated Subjects in a Catastrophic Age”), Jenny Wüstenberg (“Mnemonic Acceleration in Times of Ecological Crisis: Thinking Memory and Democracy at Different Tempos”), Mónica Szurmuk (“Environmental Humanities, Memory and Community in Latin America”), Lucas Saporosi (“Memory, Environment and Precarity: Rethinking the Movement Against Institutional Violence in Argentina”). Together, their contributions open a dialogue on how memory can illuminate the dynamics of ecological devastation, political responsibility, and democratic imagination.
