Description of the roundtableThis roundtable explores how memory politics intersects with current transformations in the international order. Research on memory has often focused on liberal frameworks such as human rights, Holocaust remembrance, and transitional justice, yet it has rarely been linked to international relations debates about the liberal international order and its contemporary crisis. The discussion aims to connect these perspectives and to consider how changing global power structures and ideological shifts are reshaping how societies remember and mobilize the past.
The first theme concerns shifting narratives: whether the moral and political authority of the “never again” paradigm has weakened, and whether other narratives, especially those centered on colonialism, decolonization, and the Cold War, have gained prominence. The second theme addresses changing arenas and actors, asking how the decline of international organizations and transnational civil society has opened space for state-led “memory diplomacy,” regional alignments, and new patterns of mnemonic conflict. The third theme focuses on the growing significance of the economic realm in contemporary memory politics, examining how various critiques of globalization and economic interdependence influence collective remembrance and generate new claims to historical recognition.
By bringing together scholars from international relations, international law, and memory studies, the roundtable seeks to map emerging “post-liberal” configurations of memory and their implications for international norms, institutions, and alliances. It will provide a forum for conceptual and empirical reflection on how memory politics mirrors, and contributes to the reordering of the global political landscape.
