This roundtable brings together scholars from Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, and Peru to examine how the resurgence of far-right movements and parties in the Southern Cone is reshaping collective memories of dictatorship, state violence, and democratic transition. It seeks to foster a comparative dialogue across national contexts on the ways in which “new right” actors mobilize emotional, cultural, and memorial repertoires to challenge established narratives of human rights, democracy, and social justice.
Building on the discussions developed in the three preceding panels—“Memories and the New Right in the Southern Cone 1: Affective Politics and Authoritarian Regressions in Chile, Brazil, and Uruguay”; “Memories and the New Right in the Southern Cone 2: Cultural Memory of Authoritarian Violence in Chile, Argentina, and Peru”; and “Memory and the New Right in the Soutern Cone 3. Post-Conflict Peru: Terruqueo, Illiberal Memory, and the Discourse of Human Rights”—this roundtable aims to synthesize and expand these debates. It will address convergences, tensions, and contrasts in how far-right cultural memories reactivate and reinterpret the legacies of authoritarianism and state violence across the region.
The participants approach these questions from diverse yet interconnected perspectives, combining national analyses with comparative regional frameworks. Carolina Aguilera examines the Chilean experience; Mariana Joffily explores the Brazilian case in comparative perspective; Magdalena Broquetas analyzes the Uruguayan context within broader Southern Cone dynamics; Valentina Salvi addresses the regional phenomenon through the Argentine case; and Oswaldo Bolo focuses on Peru from a cross-national viewpoint.
The roundtable invites an informed conversation on how cultural memories of authoritarianism relate to the current resurgence of the far right in the Southern Cone.
