Session Information

This roundtable brings together editors, contributors, and commentators to discuss the volume Slowing Down Memory Studies: Theory and Practice of Remembering for Transformative Change (Bloomsbury 2026). The book proposes “Slow Memory” as a new framework for understanding how remembrance operates across time, urging scholars and practitioners to resist the acceleration that characterizes both contemporary scholarship and public memory cultures.

The discussion will focus on how Slow Memory reframes key questions in the field: What happens when we study memory not as an instant reaction to events, but as a gradual, layered process that shapes and is shaped by long-term social transformations? How might slowing down remembrance enable more ethical, inclusive, and sustainable engagements with the past?

Participants will explore the book’s theoretical foundations – its dialogue with environmental humanities, labor and deindustrialization studies, Indigenous and postcolonial scholarship, and peace and conflict studies. The volume also bridges research and application, demonstrating how the concept of Slow Memory can inform capacity building and creative methodologies. The roundtable will address these themes from several perspectives: two editors will reflect on the intellectual trajectory and collaborative nature of the project; one contributing author will discuss the practical challenges of applying Slow Memory within specific thematic fields; and two invited commentators will situate the volume within the broader debates shaping contemporary humanities and social sciences, with particular attention to the challenges and insights emerging from Latin American contexts.

Esta mesa redonda reúne a editoras, colaboradoras y comentaristas para debatir el volumen Slowing Down Memory Studies: Theory and Practice of Remembering for Transformative Change (Bloomsbury, 2026).
