Description of the roundtableThe creation, maintenance, alteration, and contestation of memory and identity is an ongoing process. There are several means that actors seek to advance this memory and identity. From literature to historical texts and memorials, there is an ongoing conversation about identity and memory. But perhaps no means is more powerful, more generally accessible and more visible than the use of film and television. As a modern form of story-telling with powerful emotional stimuli, film is often the arena by which memory is debated and contested. On this roundtable we each will discuss specific cases where film and/or television had a powerful impact on memory discourse. We then will explore different theoretical considerations about the importance of film as a visual medium of memory. We include a filmmaker to discuss the craft itself, and include the conversations about the profit motivation (and generally crowd pleasing) motivation for filmmakers as well as its historical and identity content. The focus of the films and tv series will lie with representation of conflict and political violence, such as films that portray the military regimes in South America, racial repression in the United States, the Holocaust in Europe, political repression in the Central & Eastern European Region, and storytelling of a famous and historical city through multiple perspectives . Presenters: Dovile Budryte, Georgia Gwinnett College, Douglas Becker, University of Southern California, Violeta Davoliūtė, Vilnius University, and Giorgio Ruggeri, Lithuanian Institute of History.
