Session Information

Transregional Panel: The Memory of Democracy under Threat - Lessons from Latin America, South Africa and Eastern Europe
Amid rising autocratic tendencies worldwide, the memory of past human rights violations is increasingly instrumentalized or politically contested. In many post-conflict societies, such memories are no longer primarily understood as foundations for democratic recovery but are instead mobilized to legitimize authoritarian or exclusionary projects.
This panel examines how museums, memorial sites, NGOs, and academic institutions working on difficult pasts respond to these challenges and develop strategies to sustain democratic memory cultures under conditions of political pressure. It brings together perspectives from Latin America, Central and Eastern Europe, the Balkans, and South Africa.
Speakers: Paweł Machcewicz (Polish Academy of Sciences); Dubravka Stojanović (University of Belgrade); Marianna Tello Weiss (Espacio para la Memoria La Perla); Heike Becker (University of the Western Cape)
Chair: Aline Sierp (Maastricht University)
