Semi-Plenary: Memory and the Denial of Self-Determination: Lessons from Palestine

The persistence of Palestine as memory, political idea, and lived experience raises fundamental questions about memory work, settler colonialism, and struggles for self-determination. Drawing on Edward Said's reflections on Palestine as "a political and human experience, and an act of sustained popular will," the panel will examine Palestinian memory practices over a longer period. What role has memory played in keeping the idea of Palestine alive in conditions brought about by the Israeli occupation, displacement, and genocide? How has such memory been shaped in the absence of state-sponsored heritage institutions? Does the Nakba provide a model for understanding how memory operates in other cases of settler colonialism, and vice versa? What role does memory play in imagining alternative futures for Palestine? In addressing such questions, the panel will also reflect on their broader implications for the study of memory in other contexts.

La persistencia de Palestina como memoria, idea política y experiencia vivida presenta preguntas fundamentales sobre el trabajo de la memoria, el colonialismo de asentamiento y las luchas por la auto-determinación. Tomando como punto de partida las reflexiones de Edward Said sobre Palestina como "una experiencia política y humana, y un acto de sostenida voluntad popular", el panel examinará las prácticas palestinas de memoria a lo largo de un período más extenso. ¿Qué papel ha tenido la memoria en mantener viva la idea de Palestina en las condiciones generadas por la ocupación, el desplazamiento y el genocidio israelí? ¿Cómo ha sido formada esa memoria en ausencia de instituciones de la memoria apoyadas por el Estado? ¿Provee el Nakba un modelo para entender cómo opera la memoria en otros casos de colonialismo de asentamiento, y viceversa? ¿Qué papel juega la memoria al imaginar futuros alternativos para Palestina? Al abordar estas preguntas, el panel también reflexionará sobre sus implicancias más amplias para el estudio de la memoria en otros contextos.
