Session Information

Description:

How can we tell, in a short film, Argentina's political history through its toys? What fictions, myths, and truths are hidden, rooted in their materiality? With an explicitly Benjaminian spirit, Juguetes. Pequeña historia política (Toys: A Brief Political History) proposes to revisit key events in Argentina's history by focusing on unique toys from our country. From The Privileged Child Builder to the Playmobil set that bears a chilling resemblance to the Buenos Aires police force after the December 2001 protests; the Gloster Meteor, which replicates the planes used to bomb Plaza de Mayo in 1955, or the Oklahoma City toy soldiers sold during the Malvinas War. Using these objects as a starting point, this short film offers a reading of Argentine material culture from the second half of the 20th century. Far from nostalgia, the documentary restores to memory those fragments of the material past whose political charge still lingers.
