We propose the screening of a film that originates from the documentation of a book unearthing that took place in 2018 — books that had been buried during Argentina’s last military dictatorship. The recovered remains emerge and call for a memory of the lost worlds surrounding those books: the worlds that ceased to be imagined when reading stopped. The film follows the work of a historian reflecting on memory in the present, and on the many questions one generation poses to the previous one: why did it take forty two years to search for those books—or what was left of them? Was it indifference? Exhaustion of will? Lack of courage? What held them back? The film weaves together voices and silences in an attempt to understand what came after for the survivors during the post dictatorship years, and what they have transmitted and we have inherited — those of us born in that “after.”
Julia, a historian, wonders what to do with the books she has inherited. Only, they spent 42 years underground — and are no longer exactly books.
