Spomenik in Flux: Mapping the Afterlives of Memory explores the evolving lives of Yugoslav socialist memorials as witnesses to the unfinished work of democracy. Conceived as unifying symbols of antifascist resistance, these monuments once embodied a collective vision of solidarity that transcended difference. In their post-socialist afterlives, they stand as fragments of that promise—de-badged, vandalized, and reabsorbed into new national narratives that often work to obscure them. Monumental in scale yet vulnerable to time, they reveal how the material record of socialism resists erasure—how, through transformation, weathering, and political revisionism, memory is continually reshaped by the institutions and imaginaries that determine what endures and what fades.
The project questions material fixity and reframes the monument as a living, unstable form—one transmuted by time, weather, and political will. Designed as nation-building tools, these sites now bear the inscriptions of other polities and publics: graffiti, wartime scars, and vegetal overgrowth testify to contested histories. Once symbols of antifascist victory and collective strength, many have been stripped of inscriptions and emblems, their meanings rewritten through decay and acts of erasure. In this instability, the monuments hold open a political space—one that resists closure and calls renewed attention to the endurance of democratic values within landscapes shaped by the residue of ideology.
The installation unfolds through ten 16×24-inch metal prints and a looping short film that layers image, sound, and the hand-drawn maps and recollections of residents whose gestures of pointing and tracing have become part of the archive. By translating fieldwork into image and film, Spomenik in Flux proposes that material change itself can be a democratic act of remembrance—an ongoing negotiation between history, landscape, and the impulse to remember.
